Setting the Record Straight About NC Charges

August 16, 20253 min read

Over the years, I’ve had to answer the same questions too many times about a situation I never asked to be part of. This post is here to set the record straight once and for all. If you’re searching for information involving me, the Medfords, and events in Buncombe County, North Carolina—this is the truth.

The Situation

Years ago, my son was visiting his mother—my ex-wife—who was living at the time with Jim Medford. Jim was a lieutenant with the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Department and was related (possibly a nephew) to then-Sheriff Bobby Medford.

One day, my son called me in distress. Jim had gotten drunk and assaulted both my ex-wife and my son. I immediately went to pick up my son. While there, I confronted Jim, and we got into an altercation. Despite Sheriff Bobby Medford wanting me charged, the District Attorney reviewed the situation and refused to file any charges against me.

But that wasn’t the end of it.

What Followed

After the DA refused to charge me, Sheriff Bobby Medford began a campaign of retaliation. Over the course of several years, I was harassed with a series of bogus charges—clearly politically motivated and designed to wear me down.

Eventually, in 2002, the District Attorney’s office approached my attorney with a resolution: one year of unsupervised probation, followed by full expungement of the charges—as if they never happened.

I accepted the deal to put an end to the years-long harassment and move on with my life.

The Truth About Bobby Medford

If you’re not familiar with what happened to Sheriff Bobby Medford, here’s what you need to know:

In 2007, Bobby Medford was arrested, tried, and convicted on multiple federal corruption charges, including racketeering, money laundering, and running an illegal gambling operation out of the sheriff’s office. He was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison.

He died in prison in 2018.

His downfall was so significant that it became the subject of a book: “Busted: Bobby Medford and the Fall of a Sheriff”, which documents the full extent of the corruption and abuse of power under his leadership. The book is available on amazon: Over the years, I’ve had to answer the same questions too many times about a situation I never asked to be part of. Why I’m Posting This

I’ve worked hard to build my life and career since then. But every so often, questions come up—through online searches, background checks, or word of mouth.

I’m tired of repeating the same explanation over and over again.

So here it is:

  • I did nothing wrong.

  • I was targeted by a corrupt sheriff trying to protect a relative.

  • I was never convicted of a crime.

  • All charges were fully expunged.

  • The man behind it all ended up exposed, convicted, and died in prison.

I’m proud to have defended my son and played a small part in helping bring down a corrupt sheriff. That's something I'll never apologize for!
